Historical inspiration

There are many ways to inspire people, especially through music and social media.

Lesley Gore is one of the many singers who helped women boost their self-esteem and " played a major factor in the rise of the second wave feminist movement" throughout her singing career.  The song was published in 1963, at the age of 17 years old. women got the opportunity to vote but still had to protest for the same rights as men. In QuĂ©bec city, women were excluded from the right to politically vote until the year of 1944, which is very disappointing in my opinion because it wasn’t till twenty-three years later that all of Canada considered a women’s political thought important. Which I find pretty late.

The lyrics are so touching in my opinion, when she sings this part in particular “And don’t tell me what to do, don’t tell me what to say” in my perspective this means to let me (as a women) express my opinion and also that I’m free to act the way I want to. I would like to add that a woman doesn’t have to be “calm and perfect” which is what society expects a woman to act like.

There is another part in the song “Don’t tie me down, I will never stay” if I were a woman back then, I would consider that as my “look up too” sentence. This lyric meaning don’t restrict me from doing what I want to do and also I won’t back down and I’ll take every chance I have to get what I want; the link I’m going to be making here is that no matter what sex you are; one isn’t superior then the other.

In conclusion this week’s blog was briefly about a singer whose song was a big hit at the age of 17 years old. She hasn’t only inspired women back in 1963 but I as well in 2016.

  1. Fantastic topic and I love your unique perspective. I find it outrageous that there are still places in the world and in Canada where a woman could make less than a man for the same job. How can we as a society combat this type of sexism?
    A few issues:
    - Spelling / Grammar/ Typos (Run-ons, a few awkward sentences that need restructuring, (ex. 2nd paragraph of 1st post, “I would have been preposterous about such inequality”, husbands vs husband’s, “this concern mostly feast eyes on the United States”, capitalization, “ I resembled as a big RED TOMATO“, grow vs grown, etc.)
    - Some formatting problems such as pictures not loading, font changes , spacing, etc.
    - Only 6/7 published posts with text.

    Good work.

  2. Hey Emily! Your blog is looking great so far. I love how you are tackling such an important issue in today's society. This post in particular was very interesting because it shows how feminism in the past relates to feminism today. Speaking of feminism in the past, could you do an article on the history of feminism. It would be nice to find the roots of this social outlook on our society.

I love that you brought up Lesley Gore I find her to be so inspirational and I totally agree with it being unfair to the women in quebec to recieve the right to vote so much later. Oh and i cant forget to mention this background is possibly one of my favorites.
